It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Verlean Hodges-Powell, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She transitioned peacefully from this life on Friday, January 10, 2025, at the age of 77.
Verlean was born on January 3, 1948, in Ruleville, Mississippi, to the late Russell Hodges and Thelma Bradley. Growing up in Ruleville, Verlean developed a deep sense of family that would remain with her throughout her life. In her youth, she moved with her family to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she would spend the majority of her life, creating a rich legacy of love, kindness, and resilience.
Verlean was a woman of compassion, known for her caring heart and dedication to those she loved. She cherished her role as a mother to her children, always providing guidance, wisdom, and unconditional support. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and unwavering love, where family and friends always felt welcome.
Verlean hosted several large family dinners for many years, thus creating a rich legacy on 34th and Oxford where she would bring family and friends together for the Washington Park Expos. Her impact extended far beyond her immediate circle, and her spirit of giving touched many lives.
In her later years, Verlean found joy in spending time with her grandchildren, imparting her wisdom, love, and joy of life to the next generation. She will be remembered for her ability to make everyone she met feel special, for her infectious smile, and for her gentle but strong presence that uplifted all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Thelma Hodges; twin sister, Earlean Tidwell; children, Latonya Hodges and Marcella “Ann” Barnes; stepchildren: Eva Mae Powell, Geneva Powell and Bertha Powell; brothers: James Wright, Odel Robinson and Terry Washington; and sister, Barbara Richardson.
Verlean is survived by her children, John Keller (LaKeesha) and Korine Bailey (James); grandchildren: Ashley, April, Bryanna, Amber, Da`ja, John Jr., and James; great-grandchildren: Zy`Aire, Sy`a, and Daylen; stepchildren: Hattie, Jean, Dora, Mary Jane, Willie, Rodger, Robert Powell and Wanda Summers; sisters: Leona Frazier, Diana Washington and Linda Washington Booker; brother, Jeffery Robinson; along with a host of step grandchildren and great grandchildren; many loving relatives and friends.
