On July 1, 1941, Tyrone Woods, was born to Earl Lee and Plinie Mae Woods in Birmingham, Alabama. He was educated in the Birmingham Public Schools system. He was the captain of the football team at A. H. Parker High School. After graduating high school, Tyrone received a full-ride scholarship for football to Mary Holmes Jr. College from Westminster Presbyterian Church under the leadership of Rev. John Wesley Rice, father of Condoleezza Rice. He graduated from there with an Associate’s degree.
Tyrone professed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Sardis Baptist Church.
In 1964, Tyrone married Gloria Jean and to this union one son, Brian A., was born. Tyrone relocated his family to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1968.
Tyrone drove semi-trucks for over 35 years. He was the first black truck driver for United Parcel Services (UPS) in Indianapolis. After retiring from truck driving, he worked at Enterprise for another ten years.
Tyrone was a quiet and reserved man that was always determined to do things his way. He had a great sense of fashion and loved nice fancy cars and jazz music.
On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, Tyrone peacefully answered the call to his Heavenly Father to rest. His parents; bonus mother, Juanita Woods; second wife, Mildred Woods; son, Shawn Weeks; two brothers and one sister all preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his children: Eric Woods, Brian A. Woods (Felicia), Angel Smith (Carey) and Vanessa Allen; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara D. James (Roy) and Teresa W. Jones (Michael); aunt, Elizabeth Little (DeWitt); cousin/sister, Delois Steele; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
