Smail Setka

Smail Setka was born on September 7, 1964 in the town of Stolac in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina (former Yugoslavia). He died peacefully at his home in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 18, 2025. He was 60 years old.

In his childhood and young adulthood, Smail grew up working on his family’s farm- growing peaches, apricots, and cherries (the best in the world!). As a young man, Smail served in the Yugoslavian Army and fought heroically in the Bosnian War to protect his family, friends and his country from the horrors of genocide.

Smail immigrated to the United States in 1993 and was proud to become a United States citizen not long after. Anyone who knew Smail would tell you he could fix anything and he was always willing to help others. This was one of the many reasons why he loved his job as a maintenance technician- helping people when they were in need was something Smail did best.

Smail was an avid gardner and loved spending time outside, especially grilling and playing games in the backyard with his family. He enjoyed traveling, going to concerts, and rock hounding with his wife. Smail will be remembered as generous, kind, hard-working, and humble. He will be missed dearly.

Smail was preceded in death by his mother, Arifa, and father, Meho, and his closest cousins Andin, Seco, and Andjiana. He is survived by his wife Theresa, his sisters Smaila and Senada, his son Andin (fiancée Sarah), his stepchildren Ian (wife Laura) and Alison, his step granddaughter Monroe, and numerous loving family members in Bosnia.

Prayer services will take place at 2pm on Tuesday, May 20th at Alhuda Foundation (12213 Lantern Road Fishers, IN), followed by a graveside ceremony at Hamilton Memorial Park in Westfield. All are welcome. Please observe the Islamic principles of modesty out of respect for Smail’s faith and cultural traditions.
