Johnny B. Cox, often known as "B," was born on August 27, 1942, in West Point, Mississippi, to Ellis and Pearlee Cox. He attended Aberdeen High School before following his older sister, Mattie Florence Cox-Brownlee, to Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1966.
In Indianapolis, Johnny met the love of his life, Dorothy, on her mother’s front porch. He was 26 when they met, and together they built a beautiful life, remaining devoted to one another throughout their 56-year marriage.
Johnny worked for Anning and Johnston Construction Company for 25 years before retiring at the age of 56. He was a man who truly embraced life—his love for joking around and his warm spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He cherished time with friends and family and made sure to celebrate every moment, throwing himself a birthday party each year. He also found joy in playing cards, fishing, hunting, and gardening.
Johnny spent his final days at home, surrounded by his family, his closest friends, and with great anticipation for the arrival of his first great-grandchild. Through it all, his brother, Roosevelt "Rose" Cox, never left his side, staying with him until the very end—a testament to their unbreakable bond.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Dorothy M. Cox; sons, Stephen D. Cox and BJ Bailey; daughter, Brenda L. Bailey-Level; grandson, Jacob D. Lottie; granddaughter, LeAnna A. Level; great-grandson, Jordan L. Level; brother, Roosevelt Cox; sister, Birdie Lee Cooperwood; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Pearlee Cox, along with nine brothers and sisters.
His legacy of love, laughter, and celebration will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
