Janet L. Smith

Janet Louise Smith, affectionately called “Jenny”, was born August 4, 1948, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Garfield R. and Vera Lee (Burnough) Smith. Jenny received her education at Indianapolis Public School #26 and Crispus Attucks High School.

She professed her faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized at New Bethel Baptist church, but later on joined Greater Morning Star Baptist Church. She continued to tell everyone she met about Jesus Christ, on the job, family, friends, and strangers. Jenny was a faithful member even during her illness; her faith never wavered, and she was a gentle soul. Our hearts are full of gratitude for the life she lived and the love she gave so freely. She was the quiet strength of our family, a steady presence whose kindness shaped generations.

Jenny had a way of making everyone feel at home. With her warm smile, her gentle advice, or simply her presence, she created a space where we felt safe, valued, and loved.

On Saturday, April 25, 2026, Jenny was called Home to be with the Lord at the age of 77, surrounded by her only daughter, granddaughters, great-grandchildren, and other family members.

Reunited with her parents, sisters, brothers, and two nephews, Jenny leaves a loving legacy to her one and only daughter, Shannon Smith; granddaughters, Latoya D. Smith (Will) and Sydney R. Terrell; great-grandchildren: Tyler, Tyliyah, and Tye Hannon; her only brother left, Garfield Smith (Terry); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
