Edith Marie Bailey was born on May 17, 1947, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to William Harrison and Robbie Lee Barlow. Affectionately known as "Susie" by her family, a nickname given by her beloved aunt the late Louise Cheatham Butler, Edith was the eldest daughter and fourth of eight children born into a close-knit and loving household.
Edith was an affectionate and loving sister to her siblings. As a devoted child of God, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior at the tender age of 9 years old, under the leadership of Rev. D. B. Dudley at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.
Her academic journey began at Indianapolis Public School #26, followed by Arsenal Technical High School, where she graduated in 1966. Edith pursued a career in both retail and administrative work, showing diligence and grace in every role. She worked for L.S. Ayers, Blocks, Fort Benjamin Harrison Finance Center, and Blue Cross Blue Shield, among others. She took pride in her work and served with excellence.
Along her life’s journey, Edith found true love and companionship in David A. Bailey Sr., a devoted deacon of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. The two were united in Holy Matrimony on May 20, 1972, and built a life grounded in faith, love, and family. Together they raised three sons: David Jr., William, and Kevin—whom she loved deeply and nurtured them with love drawn from God’s wisdom and strength. She was a devoted wife and a caring mother, always placing the needs of her family first.
Edith remained a faithful and loving member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church and served in various capacities of Kingdom building until her health failed. This included leadership roles and committee service with the National Baptist Convention, Union District Matrons & Red Circle Girls, Deaconess, Galilee’s Senior Choir, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School Director, Lead Craft Coordinator, and the Kitchen Committee. She assisted in opening the doors to church and the Brightwood community, as she worked with the Good News Club held at IPS #37 with the late Betty Jean Glover and Betty Dunston - an afterschool program where children are helped with their homework and learn about the good news of Christ. She consistently contributed to the work of our Lord and Savior.
In 1993, Edith’s compassion and calling led her to establish “Loving Hands Daycare,” where she dedicated herself to nurturing and inspiring young minds. Alongside her dear childhood friend, the late Jacqueline Grigsby Mallory, Edith created a safe and faith-filled environment that positively impacted countless children and families.
On May 1, 2025, at the age of 78, Edith peacefully transitioned from this life to her eternal home. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, William and Robbie Barlow; and brothers, Marvin Barlow and Ronald Lee Barlow.
Edith leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and kindness to be cherished by many. She is survived by her devoted husband, David A. Bailey Sr.; three sons: David A. Bailey Jr., William H. Bailey (Joanneice), and Kevin L. Bailey (Darcia); eight grandchildren: Darrin L. Bailey (Devon), Sydney Marie Rochez (Johnathan), Symone Renee Bailey (Oshowga), Nyah Marie Bailey Allen, David A. Bailey III, Kevin L. Bailey Jr., Kaden C. Bailey, and Keigan L. Bailey, J’Shon Strode, Janniecissha Harrell; six great-grandchildren: Aiden Fields, Ayva and Gabriella Rochez, Kameryn, Kendall, Kailyn Bailey, and Aiyana Pryor.
She is also survived by her loving siblings: Dennis E. Barlow (Lucille), Daniel Barlow (Siyona), David Barlow (Tia), Nancy Barlow, and Sharon Vorhis; her beloved sister-in-law and prayer partner, Queenola Barlow; and a host of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, her church family, and lifelong friends.
