DR. JEAN AUDREY MARSHALL CARTER was born on March 4, 1935, to the late LeRoy and Frances Marshall in Indianapolis, Indiana. She attended Indianapolis Public Schools #24, #4, and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School. She attended the University of Indianapolis, Indiana University Purdue University of Indianapolis (IUPUI), and she received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Psychology from Martin University in Indianapolis, Indiana, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She received her Ph.D. in Professional Psychology from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she was inducted into the Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology, as a lifetime member.

Jean professed a hope in Christ at eleven years of age, was baptized at New Baptist Church in Indianapolis, and was an active member there all her life. Her great-grandmother, Elisha Washington, an escaped slave; along with her daughter, Ella Washington Allen, were among the founding members of New Baptist Church. Jean ushered, sang in the Young People's Choir and the Sanctuary Choir, taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School, and worked on various financial committees at the church.

Jean was married and had twin daughters and a son in the marriages. Each husband preceded her in death. She worked at Union Planters Bank in Indianapolis, as a branch manager until she retired in December 1998. Before working at the bank, Jean tutored and taught at Indianapolis Public Schools for ten years. While working at the bank, Jean was offered a position at a local television station, as one of their talk show hostesses. She did not accept the position. However, after retiring from the bank, and while working on her Ph.D., she was a substitute teacher in the Indianapolis Public School System for a number of years.

Jean wrote four published books of love poetry, did public speaking and motivational speaking and was active for many years at the Indiana Black Expo. She prided herself in offering "Special Friendships" to anyone who needed to talk, and to be listened to. She had traveled around the world and was a catalyst, who had the ability to make others want to move forward, and work to improve themselves. Jean conducted several self-esteem workshops for young people. She also worked with and counseled at risk children in several groups throughout Indianapolis. Jean loved children and for all children "Momma Jean", as she was lovingly called, was always available for a HUG.

DR. JEAN AUDREY MARSHALL CARTER took flight to her heavenly home and eternal rest on Sunday, May 3, 2026 at the age of 91 years, 1 month and 29 days. Along with her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, LeRoy Joseph Marshall Jr. and James “Don” Corydon Marshall; and daughter, Meredith Patrice Wilson.

She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Terrilynn Tralece Stuckey; and a son, Anton “T-Bone” Carter (Marilyn). She also leaves three granddaughters; a grandson; five great-grandsons; two great-granddaughters, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, loving family and friends.
