Dorothy Mae Cooper was born on May 29, 1943, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late Lilly Mae Lewis and A.J. Smith Sr. Dorothy was raised and grew up in Greenville, Mississippi, where she spent her formative years and graduated from Coleman High School. On August 28, 1963, Dorothy married Samuel Cooper Sr. Together, they built a life and family rooted in love. In 1969, Dorothy and Samuel relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana, where they continued to build their lives and raise their family.
Throughout her working years, Dorothy was employed by Wishard Hospital, IU Hospital, and Burns Security. She was a hardworking woman who took pride in providing for and caring for her family. Dorothy found joy in the simple things that made life special. She loved music, crocheting, table games, cooking, and playing bingo. She especially cherished spending time with her family and friends, creating memories that will forever be treasured.
Dorothy was a devoted mother of four children: Samuel Cooper Jr., Ernest Lee Cooper (deceased), Quilla Ogburn, and Tyquenia Ingram. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Samuel Cooper Jr., Quilla Ogburn, and Tyquenia Ingram, Anthony Ingram (son-in-love), her grandchildren, Devin Cooper, RahSheema Cooper, De-Shawn Ingram, and KiAsia Smith, her great-grandchildren, Nyree Ingram and Rylen Kirk; her sister, Linda Wilson; her brother, A.J. Smith Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends who loved her dearly.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband Samuel Cooper Sr. , son, Ernest Lee Cooper, and Special nephew James (Boo) Wilson Jr.
On August 7, 2026, at the age of 83, Dorothy Mae Cooper peacefully departed this life and gained her wings. Though her physical presence will be deeply missed, the love she gave, the memories she created, and the imprint she left on the hearts of those who knew her will remain forever. Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and she will be loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. Rest peacefully, Momma.
