Debra Ann Houston

June 18, 1961 — June 9, 2023

Indianapolis, IN

Debra Ann Gant Houston was born on June 18th, 1961, to Anna and Dale Gant Sr.

Debra attended Indianapolis Public Schools and successfully graduated from John Marshall High School, a remarkable achievement her family was incredibly proud of.

Debra was a devout Christian and professed her faith in Christ early on. She was baptized and became a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church, where she remained for many years. Later she joined the St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a beloved choir member and taught Vacation Bible School.

Music was one of Debra’s greatest passions, and she discovered her entrepreneurial spirit by becoming a “D.J.” for many years. She owned “Designated Hitters Lounge” and later owned a gospel music store called “Debs House of Gospel.” Debra brought in well-known people, such as the “Pilgrim Jubilees,” for concerts and was always thrilled to share her love of music with others.

Debra also found joy in Soap Box Derby racing, which became an outlet for her grandchildren. She became the oldest “Racing Granny” and even appeared on the Drew Barrymore show. Debra was given the opportunity to raise the green flag for the Indy 500, an experience she cherished deeply.

Debra was a substitute teacher and the music teacher for the School for Community Learning, where she inspired her students with her love of music.

Debra loved being a mother to her daughter, Witnee, and her greatest joy was being a grandmother. Her love for her grandchildren knew no bounds, and those who knew her well knew this to be true.

On June 9th, 2023, at the age of 61, Debra departed this life. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother William Gant, and the love of her life Thomas Bishop.

Debra leaves behind her daughter Witnee, her stepfather Alfred Zachery Sr., her beloved grandchildren LeAnn, Micah, Carii, Sincere, Ariah, and Omega, her brothers Dale Gant Sr. and Alfred Zachery Jr., her sister Lisa (Larry) Wingo, and a host of relatives, an aunt, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
