CHARLES LEE BYERS was born on February 13, 1950, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Thomas Charles Byers and Corein Byers. He was the second of seven children. At an early age, Charles accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and united with Corinthian Baptist Church, now known as Nu Corinthian Church.
Charles received his education in Indianapolis, attending IPS #74 and #38, and later Arsenal Technical High School. During his youth, he developed a love for athletics, particularly basketball, and participated in basketball and track and field at IPS School #38.
Charles was known for his warm, gentle spirit and caring presence, which children adored. He carried a quiet kindness that drew people to him and made others feel at ease. He was affectionately known throughout his life as “Blute” and “CB,” names spoken with love by family and friends.
After graduating from high school, Charles began his career at Chrysler Auto Foundry, where he worked for several years. He later held various positions he enjoyed before dedicating many years of faithful service as a mail clerk at The Indianapolis Star and News. He remained there until his retirement in June 2020, earning the respect of coworkers for his dependability and strong work ethic.
Charles was a huge Indianapolis Colts fan and always had plenty of suggestions for the coach. He enjoyed lively conversations and was known for having big discussions about life, football, basketball, Tiger Woods, and Serena Williams. Charles maintained many close friendships throughout his lifetime, and his friends genuinely cared for and were concerned about him.
In his later years, Charles shared a close and meaningful life with his mother, Corein Byers, and cherished time spent with his family, especially during visits with his great grandchildren. He will be remembered as a kind, humble, and hardworking man who showed perseverance and resilience throughout his life.
Charles Lee Byers departed this life on January 28, 2026, at the age of 75. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas C. Byers; brother, Earl Byers; and grandson, Dajaun Bradshaw.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory his mother, Corein Byers; son, Duwan A. Byers; grandchildren: Summer Byers, Lachon Allen, Duwan Byers, Darien Pipkin, and Josie Pipkin Byers; sisters: Juanita Byers Crosby, Jeweline Byers, and Kathy Watkins; brothers, Bennie Byers and Columbus Byers; nine great grandchildren; and a host of relatives, friends, and loved ones.
