She moved to Indianapolis at the age of ten, where her remarkable journey in faith, education, and service to others began.
A proud graduate of Crispus Attucks High School, Betty Jo pursued higher education in biblical studies, earning her B.A. from Aenon Bible College and furthered her studies at Indiana Bible College, where she graduated with distinction.
At the age of 28, Betty Jo accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior—a decision that would define the rest of her life. She began her spiritual walk at Grace Apostolic Church under the leadership of the late Bishop Morris E. Golder. For 14 years she served at 1st Samuel Baptist Church under the late Pastor Smith and later returned to Grace. In 2017, under the leadership of Bishop Kevin M. Harrison, she was installed as an Associate Pastor— a role she embraced with humility, wisdom, and unwavering faith. Professionally, Betty Jo dedicated 40 years of faithful service to Herff Jones, where she was known for her integrity, excellence, and strong work ethic. Her retirement marked the culmination of decades of commitment and perseverance, leaving behind a legacy of diligence and dependability.
Though she had no biological children, Betty Jo mothered and mentored many. Her heart overflowed with love for her family, particularly her beloved nieces and nephews, whom she cherished deeply. She shared a special, nurturing bond with her nephews—Tyrell Bard and Eric Bard Sr.
On August 25, 2019, Betty Jo was joined in holy matrimony to Greg Kaniewski, a union rooted in faith, companionship, and mutual love.
She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings; Ernest Drake, Fred Young, and Delores Bard. Betty Jo Stewart-Kaniewski, beloved servant of God, family matriarch, and faithful friend, peacefully transitioned from labor to reward on June 8, 2025, at the age of 86 years, 6 months, and 19 days.
She leaves to cherish her memory one devoted sister Della Bard. A host of adoring nieces and nephews, her special sons, spiritual family, church community, and countless friends whose lives were touched by her kindness, wisdom, and strength.
