Alice Katherine (Queen) Key was the first daughter born to the union of Miller & Alice (Higgins) Queen on June 15th, 1952, in Maysville, Ky. Alice along with her family moved to Marion, In, when she was 14 years old. Alice graduated from Marion High School in 1969. While in high school she obtained her high school diploma and cosmetology license as well maintaining a job as a Nanny.
After graduating high school, she accompanied that family to Lake Forest, Il. Alice met her partner for life, Humanuiash (Dennis) Key in Waukegan, Il. The two were married in 1971. They moved back to Marion and after many years of trying were blessed with one daughter (her one true love), Denetra K. Key in 1977.
After moving back to Marion, Alice not only set up shop as a beautician, but also began her career at the VA Hospital as a nurse’s aide. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1998. She later retired from the VA Northern Indiana Healthcare System after dedicating 30 years of service to them. She continued to work part time as an RN at Grant Blackford Mental Health and Home Healthcare Associates also continuing as a beautician to a few loyal long-term clients, who became close family friends.
As a child Alice joined Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where she loved singing in the choir, praise team & a women’s quartet as well as serving on the Nurse’s Guild and Kitchen Ministry. She took pleasure in working in her church in any capacity that was asked of her. Her hobbies were traveling, cooking, crocheting, gardening, sitting outside enjoying sunny days, spending time with family, and loving on her grand & great grandchildren.
Alice entered glory on June 9th, 2025.She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Denetra K. Key, three granddaughters, D’Taj A. Key, D’Zhae S. Key and D’Vailyn A. Warren (all of Indianapolis, IN), great grandchildren Jai’Vion L. Rushing, Kamari R. A. Key, Kyann R. A. Key, Keymone R. A. Key, Ty’Shawn L. Key-Hall, Kellani R. A. Key and Kateri R. A. Key, brothers, William Nelson (Lutitia) Louisville, Ky, Miller Queen (Delores), Marion, In, brother in-law Melvin Mosby, Dayton, Oh, adopted brother Chesley Rusununguko (Kim) Indianapolis, IN; sisters, Barbara Johnson, Rock Hill, S.C., Mary Scott, Marion, In. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, her church family and beloved long-term friends such as Nancy Tevis and Ann Black, who continued to check on her regularly after she relocated to Indianapolis to be with her daughter. Alice was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Mae Queen, father, Miller Lewis Queen Sr, husband, Humaniuash Key, and sister, Margaret Mosby.
Alice’s zest for life, impeccable sense of humor and infectious smile made it impossible for anyone to encounter her and walk away without having made a new friend. She was loved by everyone who had the pleasure of getting to know her. She was greatly beheld by all of her family (holding the title of everyone’s favorite Aunt) and friends for her genuine personality and the care she gave to anyone who needed it. She will be truly missed and memories of her will forever bring joy to our hearts and smiles to our faces.
