LaVonne Jones, 69, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away May 23, 2021. She was born in Indianapolis, the eldest daughter of Arthur and Mary (Merriweather) Jones. She was educated in the Indianapolis Public Schools where she graduated from Shortridge High School. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Kentucky State University.

Ms. Jones was employed and subsequently retired twice from IUPUI. She was previously employed by the same Indianapolis Public School system she once delighted in attending.

LaVonne was baptized and a member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church at a young age. She was active on numerous auxiliary committees including: Church clerk, Deaconess, Missionary team, Pastor’s Aid team, Music board and Sunday School until her illness prevented her participation. Her commitment to service seemed limitless as it extended to her active participation in numerous other community organizations including her beloved Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Indianapolis Black Alumni Council.

She is survived by her beloved nieces, Nicole Jones-Harris and Monica Brooks, affectionately known as, “The Girls”; great-nieces, Raelyne Brooks-Owens and Onesti Brookins; great-nephews, Ra’Shawn Ivy and Malachi Brooks-Owens. She is also survived by her beloved cousin who was more like a brother, Dr. Luther Burse Sr. LaVonne was predeceased by her loving parents, Arthur and Mary, as well as her loving younger sister, Ultra Jones.
