My Mother’s Style

“My Mother’s style is all her own. Grace, charm, and beauty drapes off one shoulder.

Gaudy, ghetto, and hip drape the other. She is bold and bright with her colors. Dress to always impress. She will catch your eye as she parades right by. To me, she seems like a proud-showy Peacock. Growing lovelier each day.

Femineity walks with her. Femineity runs from me. I have always wanted the beauty that pours divinely through her core. Mother has butterscotch skin, long beautiful hands, small penetrating eyes, and an inviting smile that wins.” – Theology and Art, Creation Michele Wood, daughter © all copyrights reserved 2023.

Karolyn A. Mitchell was born June 24, 1946, Indianapolis, In. She was the daughter of Felton Nathanial Smith and Kathryn Taylor. She leaves behind a daughter Michele Wood, sister Marchelle Hall, brother Kenney Taylor, stepbrother Greg Smith. In addition, she leaves behind a great aunt Naomi Render, Jerry, Vivian, Landa, Wanda Lee, Robin, Sheryl, Deborah, Rodney, Kathy, Angela, Shaw. Felton Smith’s family side, Frances, Vicky, Keith, Rosie, Judy and more.

Mother grew up on the east side of town with her family. She attended Shortridge High School. I recently learned that my mother along with her cousin would enjoy a meal or two with their aunt Margie when mother was pregnant. She enjoyed egg pie for dessert. My favorite!

Mother attended Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist as a young woman and later joined Methodist denomination. Mother lived in Savanah, Georgia for a short time and loved it. She loved the food and nice weather.

Karolyn traveled on cruise ships for vacation. She sailed to the Caribbean islands with family. You knew she had a great time with her smile. Also, her cousin Vicky and mom would make their outfits for the boat trip. Vicky and Karolyn had a special bond because they were the descendants of twin brothers. Special thank you to Vicky for your care.

Mother was a creative soul. She was born a fashion designer and stylist. Sewing was something she had in common with her mother Kathryn. She would be dressed from her head to her toes. She firmly believed in wearing her hat, gloves, shoes, and purse to match. A memory I value of mother in my young adult years, I remember working in the food industry. She came in to see me. Momma had on a hat, white skirt, and sweater with shoes and purse to match. She was like a flower that graced my day. Karolyn, my mother walked tall with her head up high and looking forward. She would tell me to look up and not down. A proud colorful peacock bird she was to me. She was my champ.” – written by her daughter by the nickname Missy. -Rev. Michele Wood
