Resided in: Indianapolis, IN

Gwendolyn Willene Winters, the daughter of William and Frances Edwards, was born October 20, 1955, in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Gwendolyn attended Indianapolis Public Schools and graduated from Northwest High School.

Gwendolyn’s fulltime ministry (NOT job) was being both wife and mother and she fully devoted herself to raising her children in the admonition of the Lord.  She poured herself into her children because she believed God’s Word when it says to “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6.   It took work, but her favorite verse to encourage herself and other mothers was Galatians 6:9 “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” And when all else failed, she was quick to tell us “Don’t shame my name!” or pull us close to her and whisper “Let me share something with you!”

Gwen, who was affectionately known as “Granny” was the type of grandma that would have all her grandkids over, at the same time, for a sleep-over that included a tea party, Mr. Monster, Squirrely, and ended with breakfast at Hardees.  They will always remember their time together with Granny.

She was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church, whereby many she was known as Mother Winters. She served as a deaconess, choir member, children’s church/VBS teacher, and women’s Sunday school teacher.  Mom was the type that was ready to teach, in season and out of season, no matter what the topic she always had a scripture verse that spoke to the matter.  You know Gwen, all she knew was Bible. She not only talked about God’s Word, but she lived it out and shared it with EVERYONE she encountered even until the very end.  She took her gift of talking very seriously.

Gwendolyn Willene Winters departed this life on Monday, May 16, at the age of 66 years old.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Larry Winters Sr., of 34 years, her youngest son Benjamin Renault Winters (Renata), and her brother, William Edwards.  She leaves to cherish her memory:  Larry Winters Jr. (Jen), Jennifer Moore (Shawn), Aaron Winters (Dawn), Leslie Winters, three siblings and a host of grandchildren, relatives and friends.

Guestbook

  1. “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yes, says the Spirit that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them” Rev. 14:13.

  2. Words will never be enough to express the gratitude that I will always have for you. I know you resting beautifully with our heavenly father!

  3. Wishing you peace to bring you comfort, courage to face the days ahead, and loving memories to hold forever in your heart.

  4. “Her children arise up, and call her blessed;” Proverbs 31:28

We are praying for the Lord’s peace and comfort for all of you.

  5. Mrs. Gwen, you taught us to follow (you as you followed) Christ. I am forever grateful for the seasons under your tutelage, especially the Chica Chats.
Family- praying overwhelming peace and comfort for every wave of grief and effervescent joy for every sweet memory and GODfidence that He can sustain you through it all.

  6. To the entire Winters Family,

I am grateful I had a chance to meet Mrs.
Winters. I enjoyed visiting her with her Carl whenever we would come into town. She always greeted us with the most beautiful smile and genuine spirit. She always gave me
Words of wisdom as a wife and mother. So much of what she said makes sense to me today.

I send my deepest condolences and pray that God provides your family with strength and comfort during your time of mourning and grief. God is so loving and perfect. I am so glad she is resting in His arms peacefully.

    With Love and Gratitude,
Brittney Clark (Carl Jr. and Zendaya)

  7. I Thessalonians 4:13-14

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

  8. Gwen truly demonstrated the good works God created for her! I am forever grateful for her willingness to provide before/after school care and transportation to school for my older two boys while their dad and I worked. I never worried cause she manifested the fruit of the Spirit in her care for them just as she did for her own beloved children. Larry, Jr., Jennifer, Aaron, & Leslie, you are to be commended for your labor of love! May God’s comfort and peace fill all your hearts now and forever!

  9. Words can not express the immense gratitude to the Lord for the words of wisdom and the life lived by Mrs. Gwen. Her steadfast commitment and love of the Lord and His word was evident with each conversation. The fruit of her life will continually be felt for generations to come. She will be missed. May the God of all comforts be with the family during this time. Ladrienne Cage, Annice, Brent, Jr., Zachary and Nathan McFarland.
