Eunice Bateman

May 10, 1932 — July 14, 2022

Indianapolis, IN

Eunice Bateman was born May 10, 1932 in Senatobia, Mississippi. She was the eldest daughter of Oscar and Sadie Burton. Eunice was raised in Nesbit, Mississippi where she attended school at Dean’s Hill Baptist Church.

She professed her faith in Christ at Dean’s Hill Baptist Church at an early age. After moving to Indianapolis, Indiana, she joined Eastern Star Church where she remained a faithful member for over 50 years.

Eunice was the mother of seven children. She put a strong emphasis on working hard and was very diligent about taking care of her family at all cost. She worked various domestic jobs until she was hired by Park Tudor School where she worked in custodial services for 23 years until her retirement in 1994.

Affectionately known as the matriarch of the family, Eunice was an easy-going woman with a gentle soul who was passionate about working hard to inspire her children to strive for greatness while showing her love for the Lord. She married Homer L. Bateman in 1958 and they remained married for 48 years until he preceded her in death. She often shared her struggles growing up in the South and committed her life to instilling the love of God and creating a better life for her children through living by example and providing heart-felt guidance. She had a heart of gold and those that knew her, loved her deeply. She enjoyed reading the Bible, cooking, and spending time with her family. Her love language was expressed through cooking for her family.  Her love for God and her family was unparalleled.

Eunice transitioned to her heavenly home on Thursday, July 14, 2022. In addition to her husband, Homer, Eunice’s parents, Oscar and Sadie Burton; five brothers: Tommy Burton, Oscar Burton Jr., James Burton, Alonzo Burton and Clinton Burton; and a sister, Virginia Bradford all preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her memories three sons: Otis L. Bateman, Henry E. Bateman and Larry Bateman; four daughters: Dorothy A. Young (Willie), Shirley L. Barnett (Roger), Gloria J. Hooten (Tyrice, Sr.) and Diana Jones (William “Jay”); two brothers, Roy Burton and W.C. Burton; three sisters: Clara Fitzgerald, Dorothy McCaster (Vincil Jr.) and Betty Burton; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
