Ethel Louise Holland Stevens, the daughter of the late Laurence Edward Holland and Mary Louise Glover, was born on July 27, 1942 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She attended St. Bridget’s Catholic School and Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, having graduated from Dunbar Vocational High School in Chicago, Illinois. She worked in the hospital communities, at both St. Vincent Health and Methodist Hospital, retiring in 2007.

Ethel accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was a member of Grace Apostolic Church, as well as having attended Christ Church, both in Indianapolis. She was truly the epitome of a “good Christian woman”. While she didn’t force her religious beliefs on anyone, when you spent time with her talking, you would walk away believing in a higher being.

To this world, Ethel delivered five amazing sons, Christopher Edwin and Glover Edward, both preceding her in death, Jerome Reginald, Michael, and Vincent Lewis. Having lost her mother and her grandmother, the most influential women in her life, just as she was starting her own journey into motherhood and family, she stood strong and persevered. Following the road map that they had provided her, she was an excellent mother and grandmother. She would spend time listening to music, reflecting on her mother and grandmother, not mourning them, but missing them and appreciating the guidance that they had instilled in her. Some of her greatest joys came from spending time with her grandchildren. She taught them so much of what she had learned from her own grandmother, from cooking and cleaning, to sewing, and more importantly, being an overall good human being, believing in and knowing Jesus, as Lord.

Mother, as Ethel was affectionately known, was loved and respected by everyone who knew her. Her trust in Christ was uncompromised and it was apparent by the love she had for everyone she knew. She was a true giver and was always there for you if you needed her. She would talk to you in a way that whether you liked what she said or not, you learned something from the conversation. She was encouraging to her family and she always had a kind word for you. She had a smile that brightened everyone’s day. Mother was a kind, loving, and spiritual soul, who brought joy to anyone who had the pleasure of crossing paths with her.

Mother loved listening to music, and if the opportunity was presented, she would get out on the dance floor and show us all her best moves. She loved traveling, having visited both Alaska and Hawaii. Jig saw puzzles came easy to her, finishing one just as quickly as she had started it. And if you know her, you knew that she loved popcorn more than anything!

Ethel Louise Holland Stevens departed her physical life on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 79 years, 2 months, and 13 days. She was preceded in death by her mother, her father, two sons, Glover and Chris, and her sister, Lela. She leaves to cherish her memory her brother, Lawrence (Helender) Holland, her cousin Bruce (Mary) Glover, and dearest friend, Peggy Phillips, her sons, Jerome, Michael (Nichole), and Vincent, her adoptive daughter, Patricia (Melvin) Glover, grandsons, Christopher Poole, Austin Bonds, Nicholas Glover, Micah Poole, J’Ron Poole, and Josiah Poole, granddaughters Jasmine, Jakara (Kei) Elam, and Jada, eight great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
